bangles galore

February 21, 2007 – 4:11 am

ever have the urge to write those thoughts on your shoes and clothes? now you can, not on your clothes and shoes though, but on your fashionable bangles. of course these would not look like the original bangle bracelets designed by Jessica Kagan Cushman. What you need to know about your recent obsession:

the bangles

  • They are made of fossilized mammoth ivory, which you can also see in the Museum of Natural History
  • They are inspired by the scrimshaw tradition of 19th Century sailors; instead of Biblical verses or women’s names, Jessica has inscribed her own bracelets with movie quotes and graffiti.
  • Hilary Duff likes them
  • They are about $800 each at Barneys…

Yes, $800 (that’s about 40,000 pesos) which means you probably could never afford it. Not unless you don’t eat and not do anything for the next 6 months. You have of course, your amazing brain power and the overwhelming urge to write on your shoes as your main weapon to make one for yourself.

your own banglesWhat you need: plastic bangle bracelet (in a solid color) and two oil-based paint pens (one fine-tipped and another medium-tipped), clear nail polish and a pencil. Step One: choose a song lyric/quote/movie line (etc. let your imagination run!). Lightly write the words in your bangle, making sure that they fit around the bracelet. Step Two: shake your pens so that they would be free-flowing. Write your script on your bracelet and make sure that they don’t smudge (it’s not going to be pretty!). Step Three: Wait for five minute for the ink to dry. If you’re quite impatient you can blow them but that won’t help it that much… (wink!). Evenly coat the script with clear nail polish to prevent them from chipping. Wait to dry. Step Four: Impress your dogs with the “bark, bark,” words you’ve written on your bangles. Go ride a jeepney (or a bus!) and make everyone stare at you by reading your own wrists. Go the malls and trendset as usual.

Hold your head up high and sway your hips as you dance along Kylie Minogue’s lyrics on your bangles. (Go to fashionista.com for a more detailed description)
