Books, books and more books

How many books are there? Well, I just finished reading two and I’m halfway on my third. Though technically I’ve already read them sometime ago, I’ve quite forgotten the details, so I’m re-reading them.

Two books are by John Grisham (of course!) — The Client and The Pelican Brief. These are really some of the first books written by Grisham (they’re old!) and I quite remember that I’ve already read them in high school some 10 years ago. So I’ve got a good excuse if I say that I’ve forgotten some of the details in the story. Consequently, both books have been made into a movie — one with the late Brad Renfro (bless his soul) and the other with Julia Roberts.

The Client is about an 11-year old boy, Mark (Renfro) who along with his little brother (Ricky) saw the suicide of a Mafia lawyer. Things got complicated because this lawyer confessed a very valuable secret to Mark before he put the gun in his mouth. The Mafia wanted to kill him while the government people (FBI) wanted him to talk. So he gets into this very difficult situation because he’s obliged to tell the truth but in consequence, he’ll be a Mafia-hunted man (err, child). What I liked about the story is how Mark is portrayed – he’s a child yet he somehow outsmarts almost everybody.

The Pelican Brief is about a law student who writes a brief about why two Supreme Court Justices has been assassinated. The person behind the assassination has a lot of contacts (and enough money) so Darby is on the run for fear of her life. As most Grisham novels, this one is a page-turner. What I also like is that the main character is a woman, who is portrayed as strong and very intelligent, yet also somehow shows her womanly emotions.

The last book is JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit. I’ve also already read this one a few years back (when I was in college) but I feel that this one also mearits another rereading. I really did enjoy The Hobbit. Compared to any one of the books on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this one is quite short, maybe half the length of an LOTR book. But it is packed with so many adventures that one can’t help but imagine yourself also going along in their travels. I actually liked this book better than the LOTR series.
