Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer

June 28, 2007 – 4:15 am

Okay, so my best friend and I hadn’t seen each other for a couple of weeks so we decided to hang out last weekend. And our idea of hanging out is to shop, order some food, watch a movie, then shop some more.

Guess what movie we saw? :)

First off, I must say that I came in the movie with very low expectations. I mean I saw the the first fantastic four movie and I wasn’t really that impressed. So considering that most sequels are not that better than their predecessors, i only saw the movie just for the sake of seeing it.

Well, was I in for a surprise? I actually really liked the movie, one of the few sequels that are better off than their originals. In fact, I liked this one so much better that I saw it twice, just to make sure that there’s no loose ends that I might miss.

So here’s 4 reasons why I like The Rise of the Silver Surfer better than the first Fantastic Four:

1. The Silver Surfer character was cool – Yes, I liked the way the Silver Surfer was portrayed in the movie. I don’t really have a solid knowledge with his character, but from my little knowledge, he is not a “villain”. I think that he was seen in this movie, as also a victim; and the audience would tend to symphatize to him.

2. The cheesy jokes that made me smile – I admit that the humor was cheesy, but I was smiling (and at one time laughed) so I wouldn’t complain. I have this impression that the four heroes are “comically” portrayed. Unlike characters in X-men or Daredevil or even Spiderman and other superheroes who are “serious” characters, the four have the tendecy to be slapstick-funny.

3. The fantastic use of special effects – what I really liked about the specialeffects is that it was just right. It was not poorly nor overly done, which in turn highlights the movie and doesn’t distract the viewer.

4. A good storyline – What prevents from appreciating a good movie is if doesn’t have a solid foundation: the storyline. Take for example Pirates of the Caribbean 3, I did enjoy this movie, but what ticked me off a bit was the storytelling. I was at times left confused of what was happening in the movie. But this didn’t happen with The Rise of the Silver Surfer. They had stuck to a good storyline, and follwed it through.

So there, as I’ve said I liked the movie well enough to overlook some bad acting (sorry, Jessica Alba) and cheesy jokes (well, I “liked” them anyways). I’m going to say that you might actually really enjoy the movie, despite not being really a fan (like me).

I’m giving this 8 out 10 stars and a bag of popcorn. :)
